Feeling Safe at School
12/17/2012
Today at school we talked about our feelings in response to the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary. We discussed that Weatherstone is a safe place and that all the teachers know what to do to keep everyone safe. We also discussed some of the strong feelings that we felt as well as witnessed others feeling. We talked about ways to make ourselves feel better when we're scared, worried, or upset, and the adults that can help us talk through these situations. Another big thing we discussed was limiting our exposure to the media by turning off scary and upsetting news stories or leaving the room if we become too upset. Dr. Brad Scwall has more tips for discussing tragedy with your children. Watch his video here.
After our discussion, we created a kindness circle in order to discourage bullying and focus on the good qualities of each other. Each student was given a heart in which they had to write kind words to the person sitting to the left of them in the circle. After writing their kind words, students cut their hearts outand cut a whole in the heart so that they could be linked together. We read our kind words to each other and each time we added a heart to the chain, we were able to tape the broken hearts back together. It was symbolic of how love heals a broken heart. We plan to send a picture of our finished product to Sandy Hook Elementary to let them know they are in our thoughts.
