First Grade Homework Policies
Math: An optional challenge packet will be sent home monthly.
Spelling: Students are given a list of words that follow our Letterland rule/pattern for the week. Students should study/practice at home. Spelling tests are every Friday and Tri Weekly assessments are on Thursdays. Spelling City is a great way to practice!
Reading: Read at least 20 minutes nightly using a book from home, class or online library. Discuss the characters, setting, plot (beginning, middle, end), problem solution, and your connection with an adult or older student when reading together.
Make sure that you are logging your student's nightly reading on the paper reading log that comes home at the beginning of each month. This 20 minutes a day counts as part of your students work habits grade on their report card. Not only that, but a nightly reading habit builds a better vocabulary and prepares students to be more successful in life.
After reading, choose two comprehension questions and complete the "Reader's Response" worksheet. Your student needs to be able to read the questions independently. They should answer questions clearly and include supporting details from the text. No need to cross out questions as they are completed as we will keep the same questions each week.
