Q1 Updates
9/19/2013
As we approach the interim of Q1, I'd like to take this time to give some updates on what's going on in our classroom. In fourth grade reading we are taking charge of ourselves as independent readers. We have been determining the theme of a stories, and poems from details in the text. We've also been summarizing the text. During our practice literature circles last week students engaged effectively in groups and teacher-led discussions with diverse partners and building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly. Students are expected to come to discussions prepared, having read or studied required material. They are to follow agreed-upon rules for discussions and carry out assigned roles. We have practiced referring to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. In writing, we have begun to write narratives developing real experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences using a variety of transitional words and phrases. We hae practiced including dialogue and description to develop experiences and events or show the responses of characters to situations. In science, we have been studying and designing mockrocks to help us understand the composition and properties of matter before and after they undergo a change or interaction. Next week we will begin to compare the physical properties minerals: (strength, hardness, flexibility, ability to be attracted by magnets). We will also explain how minerals are identified using tests for the physical properties of hardness, color, luster, cleavage and streak. Some upcoming dates to remember: Friday, September 27--Q1 interims AND early release Monday, September 30--picture day Saturday, October 5 Friday, October 11--I-Night

Hi parents of my new 4th grade friends!
We had a great day today and I'm looking forward to a wonderful school year with your kids. Just a few quick items as we embark on Q1. Your student will be coming home each day with their M.O.V.I.E. folder (My Organization: Very Important Everyday). This should return to school daily as well. Anything important will be found in this folder (homework, notes home, etc.) In this folder, I have taped a card printed with my contact information, school website, class website, and my twitter handle. My website will be updated frequently regarding homework and other happenings in our room. For the most recent updates, Twitter is your best bet. You do not need a twitter account to view my updates, you can simply visit here: https://twitter.com/Miss_Gates. All recent tweets are also displayed directly on our class website here: http://missgatesrhyne4.weebly.com/. You'll see I've already posted some links to help with tonight's science homework (review the scientific method) and how to get super cheap Kleenex for our classroom! Make sure to keep in touch, if you have questions, comments, concerns, etc. let me know! Thanks, Ana Gates 4th Grade Teacher Weatherstone Elementary Just a reminder that tomorrow students in my homeroom, Mrs. Kazanjian's homeroom, and Ms. Julio's homeroom will take a common exam called the Measure of Student Learning. The test will measure student growth in science. Let me know if you have any last minute questions!
Gates' Adapted Animals

All three classes were given the same challenge. Invent your own animal...any animal. Then tell about everything it needs to live and the adaptations that make survival easier. Each class voted on the student choice winner and the teacher chose the teacher choice winner. I am so proud of the animals invented by these creative students! The rainbow wolf with his super strong rainbow cloud lungs and the Octopossearfly with its ability to play dead are certainly surviving amongst the fittest! Hiyah Goofy Goobers! Another Terrific Tuesday! Last night we bumped our scores up to $57.62/lap. This afternoon, not only did we choose fitness by practicing our new yoga moves, but we also congratulated Ms. Nagel's 3rd graders on a job well done last night for having the most pledges in the whole school last night. Consequently they got to duct tape Armand to the flag pole & we got to check out All-Star Armand taped to the flag pole outside at carpool. Combs' and I enjoyed bonding over this event for sure. Tonight's challenge is to have the most pledges in the whole school and the prize is a Popsicle Party with the Boosterthon crew! How cool, right?! GATES' GOOFY GOOBERS! $53.28/lap! :)

Howdy Ho Goofy Goobers! Another great day in 408. My little friends did a great job in helping their school this weekend! We'll be adding class tennis baseball and board game day to our busy end of school calendar (not to mention the lunch outside and the extra recess that was postponed slightly from the rain). Our class is up to $53.28/lap! 4th grade is in the lead! Tonight it is every class for themselves...will Gates' Goofy Goobers get the most pledges? Help our school?
